For as long I remember, I have been dreaming about how I would like my life to be or more specifically, how God wants my life to be. Finding our godly purpose in Earth is not a simple task and doesn’t come to us overnight. It requires a constant and loving relationship with our Heavenly Father, and much more. I have come to believe that the following steps are essential in setting and achieving our godly goals. Now, the key and secret ingredient for these steps to work is to make sure that our goals align with God’s Word. If our goals contradict the Word of God (even if it’s a tiny bit) it is not a godly goal but a sin – and that’s the last thing we want to do.
Now that I have clarified that, how about we discover and discuss the 5 steps plan to achieve your Godly Goals?
Step 1: Define your Goal
I know, obvious! However, you would be surprise how very few of us actually take the time to sit down and define/describe – specifically – what is the goal we want to accomplish and how that goal can bring glory to God. It is easy to say, “I want to become a good Christian”. Great! But what does that actually mean? Write exactly what type of Christian you want to be and what characteristics you need to develop to accomplish your ideal goal.
Realistic Expectations: One of the things I struggle with the most is setting real life expectations. I often find myself setting “ideal expectations” instead of “realistic expectations”. Although ideal expectations challenge me to do better each time, most of the times, I end up frustrated because my expectations never match my reality. Now, I learned to be mindful about my goals and expectations. My perspective changed and I am making more progress than before. Therefore, keep your expectations real and fully based on the Word of God.
Big Goals: When our goal is considered too big to accomplish in a few days, months or years, setting sub-goals is the way to go. Divide it up and start with the smallest goal within your dream goal. Slowly move up the ladder. Next thing you know, you will be at the very top celebrating your accomplishments and the glory of the most High.
Step 2: Tools and Skills
Your second step is based in one question, “What you need to achieve your goal(s)?” And by this I mean, what are the tools and skills that you need to acquire and develop to accomplish your godly goal? If you goal is to be a good Christian and you already know exactly what that entails then, it is time you list what is it that you need to achieve your Christian goal.
Perhaps you need to read a book, take a class, serve and volunteer at church and local missions, join a faith-based group, consult with devoted Christians and Pastors, etc. etc. etc. List and plan. Do not attempt to do everything at once, instead, focus on one thing at a time. In that way, you can focus on the task at hand and make the most of it.
Support: If you have been following me for some time, you know that I emphasize having a support system. I strongly believe that a strong, faith-based support system can help us be responsible, successful and a good follower of Jesus. A support system that believes in you, will give you the motivation and advice that you will need throughout your progress in life (which includes your dreams and goals).
Step 3: PPP
We have our goal and the list of tools and skills that I need to develop. What now? Practice Patience, Perseverance and Prayer (PPP). This is extremely important because we want things fast and easy. I am not going to use my words to explain or convince you to practice PPP. Instead, I will give you the Word of God, our Father.
“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” (Ephesians 6:18)
“You are the people of God; he loved you and chose you for his own. So then, you must clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” (Colossians 3:12)
“The Lord is good to everyone who trusts in him, So it is best for us to wait in patience—to wait for him to save us— And it is best to learn this patience in our youth.” (Lamentations 3:25-27)
Step 4: Goal Achieved
Celebrate and give thanks to our Lord! You have accomplished a godly goal. This is the most rewarding experience, as it demonstrates that all the dedication, perseverance and trust in Jesus is more than worth it – it is LIFE itself! Heaven will be celebrating – I am sure of it.
Now, it is crucial that you go back to Step 1 and apply “Realistic Expectations”. Sometimes we expect fireworks and magic every time we achieve something. Honestly, most of the time, people won’t even notice what you have been accomplishing – even less, if it is for God. But you know who always notices it? Jesus. So, do not despair if you do not receive an earthly reward instead, put your heart at ease knowing that you are storing treasures in Heaven. Isn’t that much better?
Although your reward is in Heaven (and that’s all that matters), I encourage you to celebrate, with all your heart, what you have achieved. You are walking the path that Jesus paved for you. Let joy consume you and praise the Lord with all your heart and soul.
Lastly, do not forget where you came from or how you started. Your testimony is based in your past and present; moreover, it is based in your faith in God and the goals you accomplished in the name of Jesus! So, don’t only celebrate but share what it is like to live a purpose-driven life. Goals are a part of your story.
Step 5: Don’t stop!
Once a goal is achieved, continue!
This is where most of us fail. We tend to accomplish one single goal, and all the sudden, we feel so accomplished that we forget that there is more work to be done. In fact, that one goal was just a tiny little progress towards an everlasting life with our Heavenly Father.
Becoming a good Christian takes more than a single goal, and consequently, the process can take years. The truth is… you will never be able to say “I am done. God’s work in me and through me is over. Now, I can forget about it and indulge in Earthly rewards.” No. Our work will never be over because there is too much to be done for Jesus, and too many souls to save. Therefore, continue!
Achieve a goal and move on to the next. Challenge yourself every time. Set bigger goals, accomplish them and start over again. There is nothing more gratifying than living a purpose-driven life – a life dedicated to the glory of Jesus, our Savior.
The fuel comes from God and through you: Ultimately, God and only God, can help you be successful, accomplished and a godly servant of His grace and truth. These 5 steps are a raw draft of the path towards achieving a godly goal; however, your relationship with God is what ties everything together. To God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit be the Glory!
