Overcoming Anxiety with Bible Verses

We spend our time looking for solutions. We are constantly searching for anything and everything that could help us get rid of our problems… our anxiety. Some things work, and we get so happy! But… a few days or weeks later our anxiety is back and higher than it was before. We are SO frustrated and tired of carrying all the weight that comes with anxiety. We can’t seem to find a lasting, constant solution to our racing thoughts, sleepless nights and never-ending worry. Simply put… anxiety has us living an exhausting life. After trying for years, I found the one and only who could help me overcome anxiety, God!

The strength and wisdom, to fight anxiety, and every other mental health problem, is found in His book, the Bible.

I know what you are thinking… “I have tried reading the Bible before and my anxiety didn’t improve”, or “The Bible doesn’t address mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression”. Also, “Only the ones that have immense faith will with able to get something out of it”. I will be honest with you, I felt the same way. What changed my mind? The little improvements. The first few days you will question if reading Bible verses is actually your solution. However, after a week or two you will start feeling the healing hand of God. Be patient, the blessings will come. God never leaves His children alone. The solution is always in His Word, you just have to listen.

What it is said in the Bible about Anxiety? How can we overcome it?

The Bible contains everything we need to know to overcome Earthly obstacles and find God’s heavenly purpose. One of many things that the Bible addresses is anxiety. I can write 10 paragraphs about the Bible and the impact that it has had in my life and in others. BUT… I rather let God speak to you directly. I suggest you start by saying from the bottom of your heart, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening”. (1 Samuel 3: 9-10 NIV)

Isn’t that amazing?!

God never leaves His children alone, not even in anxiety. He gave us the tools to overcome every Earthly problem, no matter how difficult that problem might be. These verses are only a small sample of the many verses that talk about mental illness, and how to overcome it. We were never intended to carry anxiety, so cast it all to Him and welcome peace into your heart and mind.

During Sunday worship I heard a beautiful song, by Hillsong Young and Free, that talks about anxiety and peace. I thought I would share it with you. It gave me PEACE, something you don’t hear from someone that lives and deals with anxiety every single day.  My hope is that you receive the peace and motivation needed

Peace

You will stay true

Even when the lies come

Your word remains truth

Even when my thoughts don’t line up

I will stand tall

On each promise You made

Let the rest fade away

There’s a peace far beyond all understanding

May it ever set my heart at ease

Dare anxiety come, I’ll remember that peace is a promise You keep

Peace is a promise You keep

You will stay true

Even in the chaos

Your word remains truth

Even when my mind wreaks havoc

I will be still

For I’ve known all along

My Jehovah Shalom

There’s a peace far beyond all understanding

May it ever set my heart at ease

What anxiety fails to remember is peace is a promise You keep

Peace is a promise You keep

You are peace to a restless soul

Peace when my thoughts wage war

Peace to the anxious heart

That’s who You are, that’s who You are

You are peace when my fear takes hold

Peace when I feel enclosed

Peace when I lose control

That’s who You are, that’s who You are

I’ve found peace far beyond all understanding

Let it flow when my mind’s under siege

All anxiety bows in the presence of Jesus the Keeper of Peace

And peace is a promise He keeps

The enemy uses your anxiety to isolate you from God and tempt you to cope with things that only bring negativity, guilt and despair.

Recently, the pastor from our church mentioned that the enemy gets louder when our tanks are the lowest. That stood out to me. It changed my perspective. It helped me realize that we must cast our anxiety to our Heavenly Father, because the enemy is real (even if we don’t like to talk about it).  When the enemy tempts you and uses your anxiety to isolate you from God, you tell him: GOD WALKS WITH ME. Say it out-loud and mean it.

The strength that is needed to overcome anxiety comes from God. However, that doesn’t mean that you should disregard therapy and medications that come from psychologist and psychiatrist. Therapy and medication are needed, depending on your situation. However, Earthly things can only take you so far. The only way you can cast away your anxiety (completely) is through God. I can testify to that.

Plan of Action

Carry those verses with you everywhere you go. Put them around your house, in your car, wallet or office. Having the Word of God guiding you throughout the day, will have a significant impact in your life. You will not only have a stronger spiritual life, but also the capacity to defeat anxiety every time it shows up.  Give it a try and pray constantly. Prayer is a powerful tool!

I suffer from anxiety. I have tried so many things and I finally had to start taking medicine for it. I know bible verses are known to help but I have never given them enough of a chance. I do know that when I am in the Word, I feel so much calmer overall. Thank you for this! A lot of great verses to try out.

Thank you for your comment, Camille! I completely understand… I was in that position too. I was having a difficult time managing it on my own. Then, I was officially diagnosed and started treatment. Although the medications and therapies helped, I was still struggling. It wasn’t until I surrendered to God that everything changed for the better. Not cured, but I can control my anxiety better. Give the verses a try… I know they will help. 🙂 Wish you the best, JRN-

Appreciate your verses of peace! I really like the idea of carrying verses with you wherever you go, and literally having them written out in places where they’ll be seen often. I don’t do this enough, but when I do it’s such a blessing!

Hi Christy! Thank you for taking the time to read my post! 🙂 Having the verses everywhere help me… even when I am not purposely looking for coping strategies for an ‘anxiety episode’. Wish you the best!!!

I totally agree that choosing to focus on the truths in God’s Word can impact our anxiety levels. We will focus somewhere, and our two primary choices are on the source of our anxiety or on the God who is the source of all peace. Oh, and I love the lyrics to the song! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Kim! Thank you for your comment 🙂 I completely agree with you… the key/solution to our anxiety is our heavenly Father, who is love and peace. About the song… I LOVE the lyrics too! It is so powerful! I am glad you like it 🙂 Blessings, JRN-
